Land at John Wayne
SNA has a single main terminal with two concourses. Most domestic flights park at gates in Terminals A or B and the walk to baggage claim is a flat five minutes at most. Signage is clear; no shuttles or trams to navigate.
Getting to Sunset Cove
John Wayne Airport (SNA) is the closest airport to Laguna Beach and the one almost every Sunset Cove guest uses. A small, walkable terminal, an unhurried baggage claim, and a direct coastal route that turns into Pacific Coast Highway twenty minutes after you land.
John Wayne Airport (SNA) sits in Santa Ana, on the inland edge of Orange County, with one main terminal, a single rental-car structure, and a quiet curbside that empties out as fast as it fills. From there it is roughly 16 miles south to Sunset Cove Villas. The drive is short, the route is direct, and the last fifteen minutes are along the coast.
This page walks through the arrival as it actually unfolds, lands you at the curb with bags in hand, points you to the right ground transport for your group, and tells you what to watch for on the drive down. It also covers the alternatives, LAX, Long Beach (LGB), and San Diego (SAN), for guests flying in from international hubs or further afield.
If you would like a private car waiting at the curb, welcome groceries already in the kitchen, or a child car seat fitted before you arrive, we can help. See Concierge below, or write to us directly and we will plan the arrival around your flight.
From the gate to the cove
SNA has been called the easiest airport in Southern California for a reason. From the moment the wheels touch down to the moment you turn onto Sleepy Hollow Lane, most guests are at the villa within ninety minutes.
SNA has a single main terminal with two concourses. Most domestic flights park at gates in Terminals A or B and the walk to baggage claim is a flat five minutes at most. Signage is clear; no shuttles or trams to navigate.
Bags arrive at one of the carousels just past the gate level. Wait times are typically 15–25 minutes. If you are travelling light with carry-ons only, walk straight through to ground transport.
Rideshare and taxi pickup are at the lower-level curb directly outside baggage claim, on the marked green islands. Car rentals are in the dedicated structure a short walk across the road. Private car services pick up at the same lower curb on request.
SR-55 south to I-405 south, then exit at Laguna Canyon Road (CA-133). The canyon road bends down into the village; PCH meets it at the ocean. Turn south on PCH and Sunset Cove is on Sleepy Hollow Lane, just past Cleo Street.
Choosing your airport
John Wayne is the right answer for almost every domestic guest. The other three exist mainly for international arrivals, low-cost carriers, or convenient connections from points south. Each is a manageable drive; the cards below tell you when to choose which.
Recommended
Airport 01 · SNA
The closest commercial airport to Laguna Beach and the default choice for almost every guest. A single, walkable terminal, easy security, a compact baggage claim, and a curb that empties out as quickly as it fills. The transition from gate to PCH usually takes under an hour.
For international
Airport 02 · LAX
The right answer if you are arriving on an international long-haul or need a specific airline that does not fly into SNA. Larger, busier, and slightly further. The drive south can take twice as long as JWA in traffic; aim to land outside the morning and evening peaks where you can.
Quieter option
Airport 03 · LGB
A small, quiet alternative on the north Orange County border with limited domestic service. Worth considering if your carrier flies in here and you prefer the slower curb. The drive is comparable to LAX in length but typically with less traffic and a more direct PCH stretch.
From the south
Airport 04 · SAN
Useful if you are connecting through Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, or starting a wider Southern California trip and want to drive north along the coast. The route up I-5 is direct; traffic into Orange County thickens in late afternoon. Plan an early-day arrival where possible.
Ground transport from SNA
Rideshare is the default and easiest. A rental car makes sense if you are planning day trips to Crystal Cove, Disneyland, or San Diego. A private car is the most relaxed option for families, larger groups, and late arrivals.
The simplest option for couples and small parties. Follow the green “Rideshare” signs from baggage to the lower-level curb islands. Open the app, select a pickup zone, walk to the marked stall. Drivers know the route to Laguna by heart; the trip is 30–45 minutes.
Useful if you plan to roam, day trips to Crystal Cove, Disneyland, San Diego, or wine country. All major rental brands occupy the on-site garage opposite baggage claim. Sunset Cove has on-site parking included for staying guests; check-in instructions arrive with your booking.
The most calm arrival, especially with children, golf bags, or a late-night flight. A uniformed driver meets you at the curb (or inside baggage claim with a name placard if requested). We work with vetted providers and can arrange this with your stay. On request, additional fee applies.
The drive south
For the first twenty minutes the route is freeway: SR-55 south, then I-405 south, light industrial Orange County out the window. At the Laguna Canyon Road exit (CA-133) the freeway lets out into a two-lane road that bends through chaparral hills, past the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, and drops you, almost without warning, at the village beach.
From the canyon mouth, turn south on Pacific Coast Highway. You are now on a coastal road; the ocean is on your right; the cliffs of Heisler Park slip by on your left. Sunset Cove sits on Sleepy Hollow Lane, a left turn just past Cleo Street, eight minutes south of the village.
By the time the first beach access signs appear, the rhythm of the stay has already started. The drive is the welcome.
From SNA, you merge onto SR-55 South and slide quickly onto I-405. Twelve miles of freeway, dependable signage, the inland half of the trip.
Exit 405 at CA-133. The road narrows into a two-lane canyon route past Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. The first “Welcome to Laguna Beach” sign appears around the second bend.
Laguna Canyon Road ends at the ocean. Main Beach Park is straight ahead; turn south on PCH and the village slides past on your left. Heisler Park sits just above the road.
Eight blocks south of the village, take the left onto Sleepy Hollow Lane. Sunset Cove sits at the end above Cleo Cove. Check-in details and the gate code arrive ahead of your stay.
Before you fly
A short list of things worth knowing before you book the flight, and worth re-reading the week of your stay.
On-site parking is included for staying guests, with space for the typical group. EV charging is not on-site; the closest public chargers sit within a short drive in the village. Larger SUVs and full-size rentals fit comfortably; oversized vehicles should be flagged at booking so we can plan ahead.
At SNA, landing before 3 PM on a weekday or any time on a weekend keeps the drive at the lower end of the 30–45 minute window. At LAX or LGB, the same advice applies in stronger form: an 11 AM landing and a 2 PM landing can mean an hour of difference on the road.
California law requires children under 8 (or under 4′9″) to ride in an age-appropriate car seat. Rideshare and private car providers offer seats on request; rental car agencies rent them at the counter. If a private car is booking through us, we will confirm car-seat fitments with your group sizes when you write in.
SNA quiets down after the 10 PM noise curfew; the curb at baggage is usually empty by 11. Rideshare remains available, though the supply thins after midnight. For late arrivals we recommend a pre-booked private car so the wait at the curb is zero. Self-check-in at the villa works any hour with the pre-shared gate code.
If you would like the kitchen stocked when you arrive, send us your list a few days ahead and we will have it waiting. The same goes for baby gear, beach chairs and umbrellas, surfboards, or anything specific your stay needs. On request; additional fees may apply depending on the order.
John Wayne Airport handles private and corporate aviation at its dedicated FBO terminals on the west side of the field. The 10 PM/7 AM noise curfew applies. The drive from the FBO ramp to Sunset Cove is the same 30–45 minutes. If your trip includes a private aircraft, let us know the tail and ETA when you book.
Pre-arrival concierge
Tell us when you fly, who is travelling, and how you would like the first afternoon to feel. We will arrange the rest, from a car at the curb to the kettle already on. Most of these services are available on request and may carry an additional fee depending on the arrangement; we are happy to confirm pricing when you write in.
All concierge services are on request and subject to availability. Some require advance notice and an additional fee, and exact pricing is shared before anything is confirmed. We do not charge for the conversation, only for the service. Either way, we will do our best to help.
Private car from SNA, sized to your party, with meet & greet inside baggage claim if you prefer. Fee applies
Welcome groceries in the kitchen on arrival, from a coffee-and-pastry first morning to a stocked-for-a-week pantry. Fee applies
Child car seats & baby gear fitted before pickup, with cribs, high chairs, and bath gear set up at the villa. Fee applies
First-night dinner reservation at the village mainstays or one of the harder-to-book oceanfront tables. On request
Beach gear & surf rentals — umbrellas, paddleboards, boards, lessons — arranged for the cove the morning after you arrive. On request
Anything else you can think of — flowers, a chef for one night, a private guide for the village. Write to us; we will do our best to help. On request
Before the flight, before the drive
The practical answers about airports, timing, transport, and special arrival situations that come up most often.
SNA is the easy default. Here is when one of the others is worth considering.
Yes. SNA is approximately 16 miles north of Laguna Beach. From the curb at baggage claim, the drive to Sunset Cove Villas is typically 30 to 45 minutes depending on the time of day. No other commercial airport puts you on Pacific Coast Highway in under an hour.
There is no commercial airport in Laguna Beach itself. John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana is the closest, and the airport almost every Sunset Cove guest uses. For private aviation, SNA has full FBO services on the west side of the field and is the same 30–45 minute drive from the ramp.
SNA handles a small number of international routes (mainly to Mexico and Canada) with U.S. Customs and Border Protection on site. For long-haul international itineraries, you will likely connect through LAX, SAN, or another international hub before transferring to SNA, or drive south from LAX. We are happy to advise on the best routing for your origin.
If you can, land before 11 AM or after 8 PM on weekdays; weekend afternoons can also work. The drive from LAX to Laguna Beach is 55 miles, and traffic on I-405 south through Long Beach and Orange County builds in the middle of the day. Outside the peaks, you can do the drive in around 90 minutes. Inside them, plan for 2 to 2.5 hours.
Getting from the curb to the cove without surprises.
Most arrivals fall between 30 and 45 minutes. Off-peak weekday mornings can be closer to 30; Friday afternoons or weekend evenings in summer can push to 50 or more. The route via SR-55 South, I-405 South, and Laguna Canyon Road (CA-133) to PCH is the consistently fastest path, and the one most rideshare and private drivers default to.
Not for the village itself. Sunset Cove sits a short trolley ride or rideshare from the heart of Laguna, with direct beach access at the foot of the property. A car is useful if you are planning day trips, Crystal Cove State Park, Disneyland, San Diego, or a wine-country detour, and Sunset Cove includes on-site parking for staying guests. Guests who plan to stay close to the cove and the village often skip the rental entirely.
Standard Uber and Lyft trips from SNA to Laguna Beach run roughly $50–$80 one-way, with surge pricing on busy evenings and a slight premium for Uber XL or larger vehicles. A private car arranged in advance typically costs more but trades the curb wait for a fixed rate, a named driver, and the option of meet & greet inside the terminal.
Take the escalator or elevator down from baggage claim to the lower level. Follow the green “App-Based Rideshare” signs to the marked pickup islands. Each app assigns you a pickup zone (often a letter such as A, B, or C). Drivers cannot wait long, so it is best to call the ride after you have bags in hand and you are at the curb.
For families with small children, for groups of four or more, for late-night flights, and for guests who simply prefer not to wait curbside after a long flight, yes. A pre-booked private car removes the variability of rideshare and lets you walk straight from baggage to a named driver. Pricing is shared up front when you write to us. On request, additional fee applies.
Families, large groups, late arrivals, and private aviation.
A pre-arranged private car with the right car seats fitted in advance is the smoothest option. Tell us the ages and weights of the children and the flight details when you write in; we will pass that to our preferred provider and confirm the seats before you arrive. If you would also like a crib, high chair, or stroller waiting in the villa, mention that in the same note.
No. Sunset Cove operates a self-check-in process: the gate code, door code, and a short orientation note are shared with you ahead of arrival. If the flight is delayed or arriving in the small hours, the same code works at any time. We monitor late arrivals where flagged and can have a light on for you.
Yes. Share the inbound itineraries with us and we will plan a sequence of cars that meet each flight, run individually or stagger arrivals at the villa so the gate is not crowded all at once. Multi-villa stays are coordinated the same way; we will line up the arrivals across the cove.
Yes. John Wayne Airport hosts full-service FBO operators on the west side of the field, with hangar, catering, and customs available. The 10 PM–7 AM noise curfew is enforced and limits scheduled departures and arrivals in those hours. Share your tail and ETA with us when booking and we will arrange ground transport to meet you at the FBO ramp.
There is no free public shuttle that runs directly from SNA to Laguna Beach. The City of Laguna Beach runs a free trolley service inside Laguna itself (most of the year, with summer expansions), but the airport-to-village leg is on you: rideshare, rental, or private car. We can help if a private transfer makes sense for your party. On request, additional fee applies.
Stay above the cove
Eight oceanfront villas at the quiet end of Laguna, with direct beach access onto Cleo Cove. Share your inbound details with us at booking and we will plan the arrival around your flight, the car, the keys, and the welcome.
